Medicines That Cause Vaginal Dryness

If you’re experiencing vaginal dryness, then check your medicine cabinet. While female dryness may be caused by things like low estrogen, menopause or certain cancer treatments, it may also be a complication of lots of medications. Cold and Allergy Medications

Both prescribed and over-the-counter cold and allergy drugs are found to cause dryness in certain women. That is because they lower moisture levels throughout the body, including the vagina.

Other Medicines That May Cause Dryness

Both calcium channel blockers and beta blockers have been tied to dryness in some girls.

Calcium channel blockers, which prevent calcium from entering the tissues of the heart and blood vessel walls, are used to reduce blood pressure. They’re used to treat ailments like hypertension, migraines and Raynaud’s disease. Beta blockers slow the heart rate, reduce the force of heart contractions, reduce strain on the vascular system and reduce the amount of oxygen that the heart needs to do its own work.

They’re commonly prescribed for people with hypertension, angina, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, history of heart ailments, and  migraine headaches.

Other Causes of Vaginal Dryness

Medications are one reason you may experience vaginal dryness at some stage in your lifetime. Some other causes of vaginal dryness include:

  • Childbirth
  • Breastfeeding
  • Perimenopause
  • Menopause
  • Nicotine dependence
  • Surgical removal of the ovaries
  • Douching
